The Beauty of That New Year Tradition. “Goal Setting”

It’s a new year — time to go back to our old tradition of “Goal Setting”, what a beautiful tradition. Most of us ask ourselves this question: what have we been doing for the past 12 Months? What is that we have achieved? We think about it, get disappointed with our effort, and make a firm commitment to change.

“This time around its going to be better. This time around it just feels different. I am looking forward to the next month, the next year with so much optimism, and I can clearly feel a sense of urgency that I did not have before, more control and focus. It just, it just feels better”.

“I am going to tackle the bull by its horns and change the world” are the thoughts that come into my head. “I will be the best version of myself, and even though I did not succeed in accomplishing some of my goals last year, actually pretty much most of them, but my resolve this time is unwithered, and I am going to make this year count”.

Have you ever had those thoughts and moments, especially this time of the year? If you haven’t then maybe you need to, at least try it, Its the best feeling ever…

There is nothing better than HOPE and BELIEF.

HOPE gives us the reason to BELIEVE, and BELIEF is what pushes us forward in times of uncertainty, in times when everything seems fuzzy, and when things don’t go our way.

This is why I love this time of the year, (financials aside :) ). Everywhere you go you can see hope in people’s eyes, you hear goals, plans, and dreams. People signing up to gyms and getting themselves those year-long memberships. In the streets you find people exercising, In homes, ambitious plans are being laid down, strategies to groundbreaking ideas being put into place. I am sure even God is proud of us at this moment. If we could accomplish even 50% of these ideas, I am just wondering where the world could be.

What I ask myself is:

  • How do we sustain this?
  • How do we put these goals into action?
  • How do we not fall into the same trap that made us not accomplish what we didn’t last year?

Below are some of the current ideas I am exploring, thanks to David Goggins (An American ultramarathon runner, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete and former world record holder for the most pull-ups done in 24 hours.), and Brendon Burchard ( A #1 New York Times best-selling author and “the world’s leading high performance coach.” His latest book, High-Performance Habits, was a Wall Street Journal best-seller and named by Amazon as one of its top three best business and leadership books of 2017), who have been influential in changing my mindset and orientation on a few things that I am going to work on, and will be sharing my journey as I progress throughout this year.

  1. The Mind, — It all starts with your mind, train your mind to, first of all, believe in yourself, believe that you can do anything in the world if you put your mind to it. If you don’t mind extreme language feel free to check David Goggins interview at Impact Theory or buy and read his book “Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds (2018)”, One of the best books I have read, on pure Mind and body transformation.
  2. Have Clarity — Doing things that matter. In his book “High-Performance Habits”, Brendon Burchard highlights that the first habit of high performance is having clarity. Clarity which stems from understanding who you are, and why you are doing what you are doing. Knowing and experimenting on your goals, identifying the most important things that you have to do, and focusing on them, which takes me to the third point.
  3. Narrow down and Focus — Most of us are pulled in so many different directions, wanting to do too many things concurrently. It's important to choose your niche, and focus on not just being better, but really mastering your craft. I would recommend Brendon’s High-Performance Habits book, as a must read if you want to learn a lot on personal development.
  4. Last but not least, “Do the Things that matter the most Don’t be satisfied with just being busy, but work on things that are constantly improving your organization and yourself by a mile. Identifying things that matter the most might be the biggest thing that one can do for themselves.

Those are a few focus areas on my 2019 journey, if you are interested in tools that I am using, feel free to email me at brompo@gmail.com. Let’s journey together to the path of self-mastery!
